Updated July 2, 2026

18 DPO at a glance

  • Test today? Yes. a test today is reliable for most people.
  • Period four days late: Meaningful, though not proof, and later ovulation can still explain it.
  • Temperatures still elevated: The standout charting sign at 18 DPO, because the pre period drop has not come.
  • Nausea, breast changes, or fatigue: May be present, but each remains shared with other explanations.

What is happening at 18 DPO?

At 18 DPO your period is around four days late for a typical luteal phase. Among people who chart, 18 or more consecutive days of temperatures above your coverline after ovulation is a widely used rule of thumb for a likely pregnancy, because a luteal phase rarely stays high this long when a cycle is not pregnant.

If you are pregnant, hCG is well established and a home test should give a clear positive. If you have not tested yet, this is a strong day to do so. If you have tested and keep getting negatives at 18 DPO with no period, a real pregnancy is a less likely explanation than later ovulation or another cause of a delayed period.

A period that is several days late with repeated negative tests is worth a conversation with a clinician, who can look at causes beyond pregnancy. A single late or skipped period on its own is common and often resolves without any intervention.

Should you take a pregnancy test at 18 DPO?

By 18 DPO a home pregnancy test is very reliable, since hCG has had well over a week to rise if you conceived. A positive is dependable, and a negative at 18 DPO with no period leans strongly toward later ovulation or a non pregnancy cause of a delayed period rather than a missed pregnancy. If your period is this late and tests stay negative, retest once more in a couple of days and talk to a clinician. Only a pregnancy test or a clinician can confirm pregnancy.

What your BBT may show at 18 DPO

18 DPO is the day the classic charting rule of thumb applies. 18 or more days of temperatures above your coverline after ovulation is treated by many charters as a strong sign of pregnancy, because the luteal phase almost never stretches this long in a cycle that is not pregnant. Sustained high temperatures mean progesterone is still high, which is what a continuing pregnancy maintains. It is genuinely suggestive at this point, but a home test is still what turns a strong hint into an answer.

Common questions at 18 DPO

Is 18 DPO high temps a sign of pregnancy?

It is one of the stronger charting signs. Many people who chart treat 18 or more consecutive days of temperatures above the coverline as a likely pregnancy indicator, because a luteal phase rarely stays high that long otherwise. It reflects continued high progesterone. It is suggestive rather than definitive, so confirm with a home test.

What does 18 DPO and still no period mean?

For a typical luteal phase it means your period is about four days late. If you are pregnant, hCG should now be easily detectable, so a test is worth taking if you have not. If tests are negative, later ovulation or another cause of a delayed period is more likely, and a clinician can help you find out.

Should I see a doctor at 18 DPO with negative tests?

If your period is around four days late and home tests keep coming back negative, a check in with a clinician is reasonable. They can consider causes of a late period beyond pregnancy and, if needed, run a blood test that detects hCG earlier and more precisely. A single late period on its own is still common.
