4 DPO: the embryo reaches the uterus

Updated July 2, 2026

At 4 days past ovulation, progesterone near its luteal peak can make bloating more noticeable. Still not a pregnancy sign. Can a test detect pregnancy today? No: implantation has not finished, so there is no hCG for a test to find.

4 DPO at a glance

  • Test today? No. implantation has not finished, so there is no hCG for a test to find.
  • Bloating: Progesterone near its luteal peak can make bloating more noticeable. Still not a pregnancy sign.
  • Tender or full breasts: A classic progesterone effect. It shows up in non pregnant cycles just as often.
  • Fatigue: Common as progesterone peaks. The same fatigue happens without a pregnancy.

What is happening at 4 DPO?

By 4 DPO, if an egg was fertilized, the growing cluster of cells reaches the uterus and becomes an early blastocyst. This is a real milestone in the journey, but it is not implantation. The blastocyst floats freely in the uterine cavity for a few days before it attaches, and until it attaches, it makes no hCG.

Because there is still no pregnancy hormone in your system, there is still nothing for a test to find and nothing pregnancy driven to feel. Progesterone is near its luteal peak now, so symptoms like bloating, sore breasts, or fatigue can be more noticeable, but they are equally common in cycles that do not end in pregnancy.

This is the stretch where the two week wait can feel longest, because your body is doing quiet, invisible work. The next meaningful step, implantation, opens no earlier than 6 DPO for most people, and most often at 8 to 10 DPO.

Symptoms people notice at 4 DPO

SymptomThe honest context
BloatingProgesterone near its luteal peak can make bloating more noticeable. Still not a pregnancy sign.
Tender or full breastsA classic progesterone effect. It shows up in non pregnant cycles just as often.
FatigueCommon as progesterone peaks. The same fatigue happens without a pregnancy.
Mild cramps or twingesPremenstrual sensations. Implantation has not started at 4 DPO, so it is not the cause.
Mild nauseaRarely pregnancy related this early. True pregnancy nausea typically begins after your missed period.

Should you take a pregnancy test at 4 DPO?

It is still far too early to test at 4 DPO. Even in a cycle that ends in pregnancy, the embryo has not attached, so no hCG is being made. A test can only show what is not there yet. Hold off until around your missed period, roughly 14 DPO. If you cannot wait, know that anything before about 10 DPO is very likely to be falsely negative. Only a pregnancy test or a clinician can confirm pregnancy.

What your BBT may show at 4 DPO

A 4 DPO chart typically shows temperatures holding in the higher post ovulation range, close to their luteal peak. This plateau is progesterone at work and looks identical in pregnant and non pregnant cycles. It is still early for the patterns people hope to spot, like a mid luteal dip. A published analysis by charting site Fertility Friend found a one day dip in about 23% of pregnancy charts and about 11% of non pregnancy charts, but those dips cluster later than 4 DPO.

Common questions at 4 DPO

What is happening at 4 DPO?

If fertilization occurred, a cluster of cells has reached the uterus and become an early blastocyst. It is floating freely and has not implanted, so it makes no hCG yet. Progesterone is near its luteal peak, which can make symptoms more noticeable even though they are not pregnancy specific.

Can you feel implantation at 4 DPO?

No, implantation has not started at 4 DPO. The blastocyst is still floating in the uterus and will not attach for a couple more days at the earliest. Cramps or twinges you feel now are premenstrual, driven by progesterone. The implantation window does not open until 6 DPO, most often 8 to 10.

Is 4 DPO too early to test?

Yes, far too early. Even in a pregnancy, the embryo has not attached at 4 DPO, so there is no hCG for a test to find. A negative now is guaranteed and meaningless. Plan to test around your missed period, about 14 DPO, when a positive is actually possible if you conceived.
