5 DPO: the embryo prepares to implant

Updated July 2, 2026

At 5 days past ovulation, premenstrual cramping is common now. Implantation is not yet possible, so a cramp today is not from it. Can a test detect pregnancy today? No: implantation has not finished, so there is no hCG for a test to find.

5 DPO at a glance

  • Test today? No. implantation has not finished, so there is no hCG for a test to find.
  • Cramps: Premenstrual cramping is common now. Implantation is not yet possible, so a cramp today is not from it.
  • Breast tenderness: A progesterone effect that peaks in the luteal phase. Present whether or not you conceived.
  • Fatigue: Driven by high luteal progesterone. Not specific to pregnancy at 5 DPO.

What is happening at 5 DPO?

At 5 DPO, a blastocyst, if present, is in the uterus and getting ready to implant. It is hatching from its outer shell and orienting toward the uterine lining, but it has not burrowed in yet. No attachment means no hCG, so a pregnancy test taken today would be blank for anyone.

You are now one day from the earliest edge of the implantation window, which runs from 6 to 12 DPO and is most common at 8 to 10 (Wilcox, 1999). Even so, at 5 DPO nothing detectable has started. Any cramps, tender breasts, or mood shifts are premenstrual, driven by the same progesterone that peaks in the second half of every cycle.

It is completely normal to feel like you are reading tea leaves at 5 DPO. The honest answer is that there is nothing yet to read. The signals that could actually point to a pregnancy are still a few days out.

Symptoms people notice at 5 DPO

SymptomThe honest context
CrampsPremenstrual cramping is common now. Implantation is not yet possible, so a cramp today is not from it.
Breast tendernessA progesterone effect that peaks in the luteal phase. Present whether or not you conceived.
FatigueDriven by high luteal progesterone. Not specific to pregnancy at 5 DPO.
HeadacheHormone shifts in the luteal phase can trigger headaches. Also a common premenstrual symptom.
Mood changesProgesterone can affect mood before a period. This is a premenstrual pattern, not a pregnancy clue.

Should you take a pregnancy test at 5 DPO?

Do not read anything into a test at 5 DPO. Implantation has not occurred, hCG is at zero, and a negative result is guaranteed. The most reliable day to test is around your missed period, about 14 DPO, using first morning urine when hCG is most concentrated. Testing this early only sets you up for a false negative. Only a pregnancy test or a clinician can confirm pregnancy.

What your BBT may show at 5 DPO

At 5 DPO your temperature is usually still in its elevated luteal plateau, one day before implantation is even possible at the earliest. Any single dip here is ordinary day to day variation, not a sign. The implantation dip that charts talk about tends to appear around 7 to 10 DPO. A published analysis by charting site Fertility Friend found that one day dip in about 23% of pregnancy charts versus 11% of non pregnancy charts, so a dip alone never confirms anything.

Common questions at 5 DPO

Can implantation happen at 5 DPO?

It is very unlikely. The earliest implantation begins is 6 DPO, and it happens most often at 8 to 10 DPO. At 5 DPO a blastocyst is usually preparing to attach but has not yet. Because there is no attachment, there is no hCG, and a pregnancy cannot be detected or felt at this point.

What symptoms are normal at 5 DPO?

Cramps, tender breasts, bloating, fatigue, headaches, and mood shifts are all common at 5 DPO. They are premenstrual symptoms driven by progesterone, which peaks in the second half of every cycle. Because they appear whether or not you conceived, they cannot confirm a pregnancy. They are normal either way.

Can I get a positive test at 5 DPO?

No. A positive is not possible at 5 DPO. Implantation has not occurred, so your body is not producing hCG. Any test taken now will read negative regardless of whether a pregnancy is forming. The reliable time to test is around your missed period, roughly 14 DPO.
