7 DPO: the implantation window is just opening
Updated July 2, 2026
At 7 days past ovulation, often just the ordinary sensation of a progesterone-driven luteal phase, not proof that implantation is happening. Can a test detect pregnancy today? Unlikely: hCG may just be starting; a negative today means very little.
7 DPO at a glance
- Test today? Unlikely. hCG may just be starting; a negative today means very little.
- Light cramping or twinges: Often just the ordinary sensation of a progesterone-driven luteal phase, not proof that implantation is happening.
- Tender or fuller breasts: A classic premenstrual symptom too, caused by the same progesterone rise.
- Fatigue: Progesterone is sedating and climbs in every luteal phase, pregnant or not.
What is happening at 7 DPO?
At 7 days past ovulation you are in the early part of the luteal phase. If an egg was fertilized, it has spent the last several days traveling down the tube and dividing, and it is now reaching the point where it can burrow into the uterine lining. Research on the timing of implantation found it happens between 6 and 12 days after ovulation, most often on days 8 to 10, so 7 DPO sits at the very front edge of that window.
Until implantation actually happens, your body has not started making hCG, the hormone that pregnancy tests look for. That is the single most important thing to understand about 7 DPO. Whatever you are feeling today is being driven by progesterone, the same hormone that rises in every luteal phase whether or not you conceived. That is why symptoms at this point cannot tell you much.
If implantation does occur later today or in the next few days, hCG production begins only after the embryo attaches, and it starts extremely low. It takes time to build to a level a test can read, which is why the days right after implantation still tend to give negative results.
Symptoms people notice at 7 DPO
| Symptom | The honest context |
|---|---|
| Light cramping or twinges | Often just the ordinary sensation of a progesterone-driven luteal phase, not proof that implantation is happening. |
| Tender or fuller breasts | A classic premenstrual symptom too, caused by the same progesterone rise. |
| Fatigue | Progesterone is sedating and climbs in every luteal phase, pregnant or not. |
| Mild bloating | Common before a period as well, so it is hard to read anything into it this early. |
| Nothing at all | Very normal at 7 DPO. Most people feel nothing this early, and that tells you nothing either way. |
Should you take a pregnancy test at 7 DPO?
Testing at 7 DPO is almost certain to be misleading. For most people implantation has not even happened yet, and where it has, hCG has barely begun to rise and sits well below what a home test can detect. A negative today says nothing at all. hCG typically becomes reliably detectable around the day of your missed period, roughly a week from now, so that is the time to test. Only a pregnancy test or a clinician can confirm pregnancy.

What your BBT may show at 7 DPO
At 7 DPO your basal body temperature should still be sitting above your coverline, held up by progesterone through the luteal phase. Some people notice a single day drop around now that is sometimes called an implantation dip. A published analysis by charting site Fertility Friend found a one-day dip appeared in about 23% of pregnancy charts and about 11% of non-pregnancy charts, so a dip can happen either way and is not a reliable sign on its own. A temperature that simply stays up is expected and does not mean anything is wrong.

Common questions at 7 DPO
Can you feel implantation at 7 DPO?
Most people feel nothing identifiable at 7 DPO, and implantation itself is not something you can sense happening. Any cramps or twinges today are more likely the normal work of progesterone in the luteal phase. Even if implantation is starting, there is no feeling that confirms it. Only a test taken later can tell you.
Is 7 DPO too early to test?
Yes. At 7 DPO implantation often has not happened yet, and if it has, hCG is far too low for a home test to read. A negative now is expected and means nothing. Wait until around the day of your missed period, when hCG is usually high enough to detect reliably, and use first morning urine.
What does an implantation dip at 7 DPO mean?
A one-day drop in your temperature chart around 7 DPO is sometimes called an implantation dip, but it is not proof of anything. Fertility Friend's published analysis found dips in both pregnancy and non-pregnancy charts. It can simply be normal daily variation. Only a pregnancy test can confirm pregnancy.
