8 DPO: the most common implantation window is opening

Updated July 2, 2026

At 8 days past ovulation, a small amount of light pink or brown spotting can occur around now if implantation happens, but most spotting has other causes and most pregnancies have none at all. Can a test detect pregnancy today? Unlikely: hCG may just be starting; a negative today means very little.

8 DPO at a glance

  • Test today? Unlikely. hCG may just be starting; a negative today means very little.
  • Implantation spotting: A small amount of light pink or brown spotting can occur around now if implantation happens, but most spotting has other causes and most pregnancies have none at all.
  • Cramping: Also a routine luteal-phase and premenstrual sensation, so it cannot confirm implantation.
  • Sore breasts: Driven by progesterone, which rises whether or not you are pregnant.

What is happening at 8 DPO?

8 DPO is the leading edge of the days when implantation happens most often. The research that mapped the timing of implantation found it clusters on days 8 to 10 past ovulation, so if you are going to implant this cycle, today is one of the more likely days for it. When it happens, the embryo attaches to the uterine lining and the cells that will become the placenta begin releasing hCG.

The catch is that hCG starts at a tiny level and roughly doubles every couple of days from there. Even if implantation happens right now, the amount of hormone in your blood today, and even less in your urine, is nowhere near what a home test can pick up. This is the gap that makes 8 DPO feel so uncertain. The biology may be quietly underway while every test still reads negative.

Everything you feel physically at 8 DPO is still under the control of progesterone, which is high in every luteal phase. That is why an 8 DPO symptom list looks almost identical whether or not you conceived.

Symptoms people notice at 8 DPO

SymptomThe honest context
Implantation spottingA small amount of light pink or brown spotting can occur around now if implantation happens, but most spotting has other causes and most pregnancies have none at all.
CrampingAlso a routine luteal-phase and premenstrual sensation, so it cannot confirm implantation.
Sore breastsDriven by progesterone, which rises whether or not you are pregnant.
FatigueVery common in the days before a period too.
Heightened sense of smellReported by some people, but subjective and not a reliable early sign.

Should you take a pregnancy test at 8 DPO?

8 DPO is still too early for a trustworthy test. Even in the best case where implantation happened today, hCG is only just beginning and stays below the detection threshold of home tests for several more days. A negative at 8 DPO is the expected result and does not rule pregnancy out. hCG typically becomes reliably detectable around your missed period, so testing then, ideally with first morning urine, gives a far more meaningful answer. Only a pregnancy test or a clinician can confirm pregnancy.

What your BBT may show at 8 DPO

Your temperature at 8 DPO should still be elevated above your coverline on progesterone. This is one of the days an implantation dip is most often reported, a single day where the temperature drops and then climbs back up. It is worth remembering that Fertility Friend's published analysis found a one-day dip in about 23% of pregnancy charts and about 11% of non-pregnancy charts, so it shows up in both. A steady high temperature is equally normal and reassuring.

Common questions at 8 DPO

Is 8 DPO the most common implantation day?

8 DPO falls at the start of the days when implantation happens most often, which research places on days 8 to 10 past ovulation. So it is a plausible day for it, but implantation can also occur several days earlier or later. There is no way to feel it happen, and a test this early will still very likely read negative.

What does 8 DPO spotting mean?

A little light spotting at 8 DPO can be implantation-related, but it can also come from many other causes, and most pregnancies never involve spotting at all. On its own it cannot confirm or rule out anything. If you had it, note the date and plan to test around your missed period. Only a test can confirm pregnancy.

Can I get a positive test at 8 DPO?

It is very unlikely. Even if implantation happened today, hCG has barely started and sits below what home tests detect. A few people with earlier implantation might see a faint line on a sensitive test, but negatives at 8 DPO are normal and not conclusive. Testing around your missed period is far more reliable.
